I am so very blessed to have an amazing mom who has worked all her life to make sure she raised 4 great (just being modest here ) children. I started to look for a card for her for today and came across one that really rubbed me the wrong way…
The card said, “Motherhood is one job that if you do it well, you work yourself out of a job.” I understand the sentiment behind this statement. However, I just can’t make myself agree with it. Yes, because I have an amazing mother, I am able to live and work on my own, raising my own family, enjoying my own marriage. The other side of this is that five children and almost 10 years of motherhood haven’t diminished the number of questions I ask my mom or the times that I ask her for help or support – and she is so quick to give it. Sick child? No problem – Mom (or Dad if he happens to be closer) is quick to run to the store for Pedialyte or Gatorade or saltines, whatever we might need. Library book? Medical question? She is right there to help us. Overwhelemed with activities? She is happy to assist however she can. So today, all preprinted sentiments aside, I want to say, “Thank you” to my mom for being awesome and inspirational and always there for me! I love you and hope I can be half the mom you ARE. Happy Mother’s Day!!!
P.S. I’m thinking the “job” functions may change, but Motherhood is a career that never ends – and I’m so happy to have been blessed with it!
